excerpt from Desmond Tutu interview
Why follow a spiritual path of any kind
(as opposed to a particular path)?
It is not just that there is a spiritual hunger, it is how we are made. We have been created as extraordinary things, we are finite creatures who can be satisfied only by the infinite. The great African saint Augustine said “Thou has made us for thyself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in thee.” They say in each one of us there is a God-shaped space and only God can fill that space. We often try to find things other than God to satisfy us and we always come up short because only God can ultimately satisfy the deep hunger in us. And so when you say that people are hankering after God, they are just being natural. That is what they should be doing from year one.
Be patient toward all that is unresolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves.
